Chapter 12

T here had been many severe blows to Tom and Jolene’s relationship over the years but without a doubt his affair was what had ultimately pushed them towards the breaking point. Because of the havoc wreaked on his family by his indiscretion, Tom had committed to himself he would never again betray another individual by being romantically involved with more than one woman simultaneously.

But selfish living leads to lack of self control and suddenly he found himself being sucked in by Satan. Instead of actively resisting, he just went along for the ride until, about one and a half years after his divorce, he found himself dating multiple women at the same time.

Once again his unfaithfulness had caused him to plunge to the very depths to which he’d vowed he would never sink.

When he realized just how low he’d allowed himself to sink, he fell to his knees, dropping his head on the ground in despair. A wail from somewhere deep inside fought its way to the surface. He didn’t know how long he lay in that position, trembling, as sob after sob engulfed him and wracked his entire body.

Eventually the wailing turned to desperate moans of a miserable man whose heart is full of regret and remorse.

Finally, without even considering the weight or impact of what was coming from his own lips, the groaning of Tom’s heart took the form of repentant words spoken out loud, confessing his deplorable state.

“I’m so sick and tired of living this life, God! I am such a miserable sinner. Jesus, I need your help!” The words poured out of him in a rush. He continued emotionally, “I can’t do this on my own. Help me, Jesus! I need you!”

And there, in the midst of all the stench of his filth and sin, the Savior came and met him!

As the brilliance of Jesus’ holiness illuminated every sinful thought and action in Tom’s life, he nearly felt crushed under the burden of it all. The price for a sinner like him was just too great to pay. How could he ever match up to the holiness of the Savior standing before him? He knew what a filthy, wretched person he had become; he would never be good enough to deserve forgiveness for all he had done!

That’s when grace stepped in.

Before the weight of his transgressions utterly destroyed him, Tom was reminded of a beautiful truth from Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Embracing that truth meant he didn’t have to be clean to come to Jesus; Jesus would take him just as he was…and make him clean!

And that is exactly what the Savior did! Right then and there, as Tom placed his faith in the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood, his sins were washed away by the perfect, sinless blood of the Lamb. The great chasm of sin that had separated Tom from his Savior for so long had
